Frequent Fliers Take Advantage of US Mint's Direct Ship Program
In June 2008, the United States Mint introduced the Direct Ship Program. Businesses and individuals were able to order circulating dollar coins directly from the United States Mint at face value with no charges for shipping and handling. The purpose of the program was to remove barriers and improve circulation of the one dollar coin, but frequent flier mile enthusiasts had other ideas. They have used the program to rack up enormous rewards at zero net cost.
When the Direct Ship Program was introduced, United States Mint Direct Edmund Moy stated, "Retailers and financial institutions want to be responsive to customers' requests for the Presidential $1 Coin. The $1 Coin Direct Ship Program will help them to easily obtain the number of coins that best suits their needs."

The 2009 proof Platinum Eagles are moving fast with what looks to be a sell out in the very near future. 7,207 of the available 8,000 are gone as of Sunday, Dec. 6. The price for the 99.95 percent pure platinum coin is currently $1,792.00, with an order limit in place of five per household. Given that the eagles are the only platinum option available from the Mint this year -- no bullion versions, fractional sizes, etc. -- these coins could be sold out by week's end.
Like the eagles, Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coins went on sale Dec. 3. Initial figures are showing that collectors purchased 1,791 of the proofs and 1,048 of the uncirculated options for respective prices of $754 and $741. The coins are the thirteenth in a series of commemoratives designed to honor former first ladies of the United States, and the last of 2009. Each contains 1/2 ounces of 24-karat, .9999 fine gold.
