My mother is 89 years old, blind in one eye and has terrible eyesight in the other. Does anyone know of any organizations that could provide support for such a person? If not, what products beyond a standard magnifying glass might be useful? We live in St. Louis county, Mo. Thanks
A disability board in your area can provide those things for your mom. I will check your area and find the nearest one to you: Here are 3

Also, please check with the Lions Clubs in your area!

would your eye sting if you got anything harmful in them? regards
a lot of things can blind you
or colour blind you
just protect your eyes the best you can ><
eyes normally sting when something contacts them
its normal, the eyes are trying to make tears come
to wash away the thing that touched it
Off key in fact there is a girl called Lizzie in my class, I wonder if she could be the same one?
I would rephrase the English to: "400 products for the blind are available for sale" as the original is not particularly good English.
How about: "Nous disposons de 400 produits pour les aveugles."

Hello everyone,
I' am currently in grade 9 and for school work I have to get ideas and inspiration from the internet as well as from other sources.
My project at school is making an entertaining product for a blind person.
Now I have to use textures, smells, sounds etc. I have thought of a memory game of which the cards are covered with a certain material.
Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks so much for any responses! It's due tomorrow and I really need some help ;)
Thanks in advance!
Well what age group are you aiming your idea at? A memory game like the one you suggested might be wonderful for a preschool age child (3 to 5), but maybe not for an older blind individual. I myself am blind (yes, we can use computers), so I can give you a list of what is already out there specifically for blind entertainment and see if that gives you ideas.
-Audio books
-Audio games (like video games on computers, but with sound only)
-Tactile Chess (the black pieces are normal and the white have a bump on the top. The squares on the board are tactile)
-Tactile Checkers (similar concept)
-Braille Scrabble
-Tactile puzzles
-Braille Uno cards
-Braille playing cards
-Goal Ball (a popular blind sport played with a ball that has bells in it)
-Soccer balls with bells
-Basketballs with bells
-Beep Baseball (it's what it sounds like. Baseball played with a beeping ball and buzzing bases)
-Raised Drawing Boards (can draw raised lines)
-Scented crayons
-Braille mazes
-Games for braille note-takers
-Audio memory games
-Software to make iPods accessible
-Descriptive movies
And more that I'm likely not thinking of. There are also a lot of things that blind people and sighted people can both use for entertainment. Playdough, iPods, sporting goods, regular movies, and so on. See if that gives you any ideas.
My dad is blind and he can't see the numbers on bills so he mistakenly gives like $50 when he means to give $5, and $20 when he means to give $1.
There are devices known as "Bill Readers", "Currency Identifiers" and other names that can identify the currency of whatever country they are programmed for. They are rather expensive, which puts them out of the reach of most blind folks.
The US is issuing a special dollar coin later this year in honor of Louis Braille, and it has the denomination in Braille on the coin. Sadly, that is the only production currency in the US that has any identifiable Braille markings on it, but there is a major movement in the works that is bringing the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve and advocates for the blind together to make the US bills more identifiable for blind/low vision folks.

WHO: Smoking kills 5 million every year
LONDON — Tobacco use kills at least 5 million people every year, a figure that could rise if countries don't take stronger measures to combat smoking, the World Health Organization said Wednesday.
In a new report on tobacco use and control, the U.N. agency said nearly 95 percent of the global population is unprotected by laws banning smoking. WHO said secondhand smoking kills about 600,000 people every year.
The report describes countries' various strategies to curb smoking, including protecting people from smoke, enforcing bans on tobacco advertising, and raising taxes on tobacco products. Those were included in a package of six strategies WHO unveiled last year, but less than 10 percent of the world's population is covered by any single measure.
For Blind Gamer, Lawsuit Against Sony Is Clear - defective ...
The Examiner reports that Sony is facing a lawsuit from a blind gamer named Alexander Stern in California. Mr. Stern contends that even after repeated requests he made to Sony via email to revise their games to make them more accessible, the company did not revise their games. For blind gamers, this is a big deal.
The gamer sued under Title III of the ADA and under California civil rights law.
ADA Title III requires that all public accommodations and facilities from commercial and non-profit entities be accessible to disabled Americans.
While the law historically applies to physical accommodations, Stern alleges them broad enough to include the virtual world as well. While his complaint makes referrence to the brick and mortar Sony stores that sell Sony's games, his primary argument is that the gaves themselves are goods, services, privileges, advantages or accomodations of the stores, thus bringing them under Title III of the ADA.
