If a blind person were to read the bumps on your areolas, what would they read?

This is a survey for The National Institute for the Blind so serious answers only!

Study this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Areola
In anatomy, the term areola, plural areolae, is used to describe any circular area such as the colored skin surrounding the nipple. While it is most commonly used to describe the pigmented area around the human nipple (areola mammae), it can also be used to describe other small circular areas such as the inflamed region surrounding a pimple.

No one is gettting close enough to me to read the areolas around my pimple.

Is This A Good Story/Beginning?

this is a story about a girl who volutneers at an elderly home, and then befriends an aging blind man. it's just supposed to be sweet n stuff, because he tells her all about his life, etc.,
this is like the first paragraph or so. tell me what you think!!! THANKS XOXO

“And why are you applying here?”
“What was that?”
“I asked why you were applying.”
“Oh.” Audrey breathed slowly, forcing her lips to not spill the real reason she had scribbled an application to Green Oaks Nursing Home-she really wanted the charity merit on her soon-to-be submitted high school application. She needed to be able to muster up some fake passion about how she “loved volunteering,” and “the joy you get from helping others,” and “they all just have such interesting life stories!” She had gotten an A in Drama after all. Well, Drama class wasn’t graded, but Audrey was pretty sure her performance would’ve won her an A.
“I feel like my life needs some…” Audrey paused to find the words. “Meaning?”
“Your life needs meaning?” Her interviewer Mrs. Wilbur peered over her thin rimmed glasses whilst simultaneously adjusting them.
“Well, I mean, my life has meaning, I just feel like I need to contribute. And I’ve always enjoyed listening to my grandparents tell stories.” She was lying. Audrey had never met one set of grandparents, and the others spent most of their family time making comments on Audrey’s weight. For this she resented them. She could never remember them tell a single story. The most lengthy time they had talked to her was when her grandmother had heard about a new acai berry diet.
“M-hm. Yes.” Mrs. Wilbur’s pen moved quickly across the paper.“Do you have any experience?”
“Um…I volunteered at a…” Audrey glanced nervously around the room. She had no experience, and she knew she couldn’t get this volunteer position without some. She needed this for her application. Suddenly the thoughts of SSAT’s, grades….it all began to whiz through her mind. She needed this, she needed this. She could lie. With a last desperate look, she saw the title on Mrs. Wilbur’s desk, White Walls, The Story Of A Blind Boy.
“Blind Institute. I volunteered there. Amazing experience, I must say.”
Suddenly Mrs. Wilbur looked interested.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me about it. What did you do there?”
“Oh, I talked with the blind, helped set up meals, clean up the place. I was mostly a social volunteer though.”
Mrs. Wilbur was nodding, and smiling.
“You know, I actually may have the perfect job for you.”
Audrey grinned. “Great, because I’d be so excited to volunteer here.”
"It'd be social volunteer work. I just have to work through a few details, nothing serious, just shifts and schedules. You can start next week."
Audrey was beaming. She finally felt the sweet cloak of satisfaction enthrall her, and she inhaled it warmly, soaking in the fulfillment.

I liked how your story started in media res, right into the moment so you didn't waste any time setting up the interview. The interviewee exhibits a keen desperation and the mini diversions were used to show how quickly she could think and fabricate answers. The only problem I had as a reader was that the interviewer did not say she would check on her references, something that everyone who has been to an interview know COULD be done. Since the girl obviously gets her job, you'd need to show why she got the job despite the lack of experience and lying about her experience. You have a good ear for dialogue and the action moves forward well. Great job! Thank you for posting this, I enjoyed reading it.

Hey you writers out there! you want to read my short story of a blind girl?

im not gonna lie. its lengthy. but i sure do hope it is worth it for the few that read it. critique my writing will you?

Nightland

“It’s time to get up now Alex. It’s time to get ready” my mom whispered in my ear. I felt my way out of my warm cozy covers and felt the ground with my feet. Just to wake my mind up a bit. I hear my mom opening my drawers and making her way back to the side of my bed, where I am now sitting. She helps me get dressed everyday for school, though I don’t see the point in it. It’s not like anyone will see me, plus I really couldn’t care less about my appearance.
We are finally in the car, and about ten minutes into trip my mom asks me what my career path is going to be. Being a junior at Woodstock’s Institute for the Blind I never really thought about my career. I rarely thought about the future.
“I don’t know.”
“Alex, you’re almost a senior now, you will have to pick a career sooner or later, and time flies fast you know….”
I let her babble on about me and my negligence while I sink in the slippery leather seats and think about how I can only see into the back of my eyelids. Today in class we are reviewing all that we have learned this semester. We go over money, and those little dots that help us figure out M’s from N’s and six from nine. After Class we are allowed to go into the lunch room. I sit with my friends Jayd and Tony every single day. I have known them ever since I started in kindergarten.
“I had the weirdest dream yesterday, you guys” Jayd announces.
I sighed and asked “what did you dream about?”
“I dreamt that I was a frog”
“Nice” I reply uncaringly. Her dreams have always been ridiculous. First of all, I doubt she even knew what a frog was or what it even looked like. School lets out at 2:00 and I couldn’t be any happier. As the regimen goes, my mom gets out of the car and leads me to where she is parked. At least I can put my seatbelt on by myself. As I feel my way into my room, I lay down face first on my bed. My covers felt just as cozy as they were this morning. I subconsciously fall asleep.
Immediately, I found myself in another world. I lay on the ground and looked around me. The light was intense and the sun beamed its rays right into my eyes. My hands sunk into this unknown matter as I tried to level myself up with my jelly like feet. I finally rejected the sun and turned my head to face another direction. The colors were so bright, sadly, I couldn’t identify them. I then saw a rushing form of something. My hands automatically jetted to touch it, just to figure it out. So this must be water. I was then shocked by what I saw next.
Could this be me? I couldn’t imagine in a hundred years that I would be looking at myself for the first time. Using the sun as my reference, my eyes appeared dark, and my hair also dark and super curly. My skin was dark as well. I looked deeper into the water to see more of me. A form jingled from my ears. These must be the butterfly earrings that mom had gave to me when I was younger. It’s nice to see what they finally looked like. I touched my face and my earrings. I love that my hands are no longer my sight anymore, just accessories to my newfound vision. Then, I heard, “Alex….Alex”
It sounded like Mom. My head was about to explode with excitement as got up and searched the lands for her. I wanted to see what she looked like.
I then laid my bed looking in total darkness. I heard my mom say “Alex, its time for school.”
I heard my mom opening my dresser. Disappointment overfilled me as I got back to reality, but I remained happy at the same time. My mom began to dress me when I asked if the outfit she picked out looked cute. “Wow. Alex, I never imagined you would ask me anything of that sort.”
“Yeah, I know. I just want to make sure.”
She guided me to the car. I sat down in the slippery leather seat, putting on my seatbelt. I thought about my dream and how it could have been better. I thought about how I looked. I couldn’t wait to tell Jayd about my dream. More importantly, I couldn’t wait have another dream. Anxiety overwhelmed me as the possibilities seemed endless for what I might finally get to see.

First of all, 'Nightland' is... well, it just doesn't seem like the best title ever. It sounds more like some sort of sci fi/fantasy thing.
Anyway, this was pretty good. There are some times where you say how the girl feels, but it's sorta confusing, and I'd take it out. For example, in her dream you say 'It’s nice to see what they finally looked like.' I'd take it out, firstly, because it's already implied. Second, you're using a different tense in the sentence than in the rest of the section (and actually, you have two different tenses in the same sentence - maybe that's why it seemed so awkward for me). Actually, you switched tense from past to present several times. You need to rewrite this so it's all in one tense.
I also had a problem with the girl. I liked the voice of the story, which is good. I also had some respect for the girl because she was blind. But when she responded to her friend uncaringly, it made me like her less. If I were you, I'd try to rewrite that bit so the reader can understand more why she'd act like that. For example, start explaining how the friend had very unusual dreams, and then have your main character respond, and then skip the bit where you say she spoke indifferently, and go straight on to the doubts about a frog's look.
So, overall, this is good. You need to clean it up a bit and give the reader more to care about - and show some conflict.
Keep writing (and editing)!

What could you do to raise money for your favourite charity?

It has to be something that not many other people could do.
And what is your favourite charity, you would give the money to?.

I could sit in a glass box, and let harmless spiders run all over me, because I have never been afraid of them.

And any money I made would go to the to the "Royal Institute for the Blind and Partially Sighted", because I have been there.
Irish, your quilt is beautiful, is it also a duvet cover?

I would threaten to sing Karaoke. Everyone would pay good money for me to NOT sing. $$$ ;)

Donation? St. Jude's.

  • Fewer Than One in Ten Companies Evaluate Vendors or Train Employees on Cloud ...

Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) and the Ponemon Institute, a leading privacy and information management research firm, today announced the findings of a joint survey of IT professionals. The survey revealed that most organizations lack the procedures, policies and tools to ensure that sensitive information they put in the cloud remains secure. Despite security concerns and the expected growth in cloud computing, only 27 percent of respondents said their organizations have procedures for approving cloud applications that use sensitive or confidential information.

In most organizations, large gaps exist between those currently evaluating cloud computing vendors and the IT and security business leaders that should ideally be responsible. Of the organizations surveyed, 68 percent indicated that ownership for evaluating cloud computing vendors resides with end users and business managers. Only 20 percent of the organizations surveyed reported that their information security teams are regularly involved in the decision making process and approximately a quarter said they never participated at all. However, 69 percent of the respondents indicated they would prefer to see the information security or corporate IT teams lead the cloud decision making process.

The Miracle Worker at BCT: What a way to start a week

Thank you to those who could attend tonight’s rehearsal. The schedule was changed due to the holiday. We did state the mistake of 1pm on the calendar to be 7pm at the read through, and then again verbally at rehearsals and lastly I posted the change very boldly on this blog. If you did not get the update I apologize but the production team did the best that they could to inform everyone. Please make sure that your contact information is up to date. I have had trouble contacting those who needed to speak to me receiving disconnected phone line messages and e-mails kicked back to me. The producers, stage manager and myself have not had any change in contact information so please inform us...
