If someone knew how to read Braille, could they put that on resumes and college applications?
If so, how would they say that? and what would that be under?
You can only put that in a resume if it is truly an accomplished skill of some measure. Same with college app.
2 or 3 places are possible.
Under Special Skills. For Example If you were a fast typist, you would put the speed (amount of words per minute) at which you are accurate, Typing is a special skill.
Under Launguages. It is not a language, but is an interpretation of same. It is MORE IMPORTANT TO NOTE if you are equally skilled in writing (or more acurately, creating) the letters and words and sentences, as you use a special instrument.
Under Special interests. Is there a reason why you are skilled in this area, that would lead to interest in related fields of study? If so, say so.

I know there are three different weights of Braille paper (light, medium, and heavy). Which one should I get for children who are just learning how to write Braille (ages ranging from six to teenagers)? I imagine heavy weight would be hard to push through, but I'm not sure, and I think light weight might tear earier? But again, I'm not sure. Does anyone know what weight is best? Should I play it safe and get medium?
The Braille paper that is available from the American Printing House for the Blind, Louisville, Ky. has one weight of Braille paper that is used by beginners as well as those who have a good command of Braille. Are the young children who are learning Braille using a Braille writer or slate and stylus? I prefer starting them out with a Braille writer, but there are differences of opinion on this. If using a Braille writer then the paper from the Printing House would be fine. If starting out using slate and stylus, then the paper would need to be relatively easy to push the stylus through, but not so thin as to allow holes in the paper thus making it hard to read, again the American Printing House paper would do the trick.
Are there any good suggestions for some good books on learning braille and sign language? Preferrably ones I can get at the library.
For Braille go to www.braillesuperstore.com
They are amazing and they have a Braille for Sighted program that works well. I learned Braille Level I in less than three months. I know it well enough to read advanced text.

I'm planning on getting a tattoo written in braille, but also in German. Since this is a bit of a challenge, I was wondering how I could make sure that the text is correct. Thanks!

I guess im going bilnd, my eye doctor not only said I cant get lasik now, but my vision is getting worse every year, now im at a -8.50 in both eyes. Are there any programs that will help me learn braille for free?
Unless you have a disased eye, there is no reason to go blind just from having a high prescription.
I have patients wearing - 18.00 and - 20.00 , and they aren't blind.
If you still have good vision with your glasses or contacts, there is no reason to believe you are going blind.
But with high myopia like you have, you should be checked often for signs of retinal problems.
You most likely see your eye Dr. every year or two, and that is something he surely checks for.
I don't know where you can get courses in braille, but you have lots of time to check it out...learning something new is always good, even when it will probably never be needed.

Braille Without Borders In Tibet - Tonic
How many of you were blind to the fact that Oct. 13th was White Cane Day ? OK, me too but my shortsightedness has been restored by a remarkable woman.
Sabrye Tenberken has been blind since her early teens. She attended a special school for the blind in Germany and in eighth grade during a field trip to an exhibit on Tibet, she was romanced by the country's history and culture. So much so that she continued learning about Tibet at the University of Bonn where upon learning there was no Braille script for Tibetan, she went right ahead and developed it herself.
In Tibet there are 2.62 million people of which an estimated 33,000 are blind. The high rate of blindness is largely attributed to a deficiency of vitamin A in the Tibetan diet and exposure to strong ultraviolet rays because of the region’s high altitude. To make matters worse, the blind are treated with great disrespect in Buddhist culture where many people believe the blind are being punishment for something they did in another life. And so there has been little support for or understanding offered to them.
